County continues to struggle with money problems

Sequoyah County Commissioners had to continue dealing with a budget deficit at its meeting Monday, partly due to the delay in perceiving a new sales tax half a penny to the county sheriff and jail operations.

Bruce Tabor a district commissioner, said he expected to collect sales tax approved by voters in October 1913, will begin in November and returned to the county tax in January. However, the Oklahoma Tax Commission informed the county tax collection will not begin until January, and returned the tax to the province three months later, in March or even late April.

That leaves the county government short of money until the sales tax starts rolling in.

To pay health insurance premiums, commissioners borrowed $ 40,000 from the office of the clerk and $ 30,000 from the office of county treasurer this year's budget. The $ 70,000 for health insurance benefits must also be approved by the special meeting of the county.

Tabor said, "We hope that next year will be a much better year. We are still having trouble with the sheriff's office and jail. "

Sheriff Ron Lockhart told the commissioners that have enough money to continue operations of his office and jail.

"I have enough to operate until January. I used everything I have" Lockhart said the commissioners about their backgrounds. "I have less money now than I did after the last fiscal."

Taboada said the commissioners had to borrow money to the court clerk and treasurer for paying only the performance of health workers. Otherwise, Tabor said, the county would to cancel the insurance of all health employees.

Lockhart said: "We're going to have to put some people ... maybe 11 to 12 people. What want to do? "

"I do not know," said Taboada. "We gave everything we had. I do not know where the money went, but it's gone. No I have answers. "

Taboada said he was told the sales tax will be returned to the county, "maybe in March, but who knows.

"That's the situation," said Taboada. "We can cut any insurance or run the jail. That is the only alternative we have."

Tabor said the manufacturer of the county budget, Vickie Wilson of Shawnee, was working on a new budget this week hoping to reach.
